**Grade-Level Overview**

**Literacy:**  

In second grade, students embark on an exciting journey to further develop their reading and writing abilities through a rich array of texts, including captivating stories, informative nonfiction, and delightful poetry. They enhance their reading fluency and expression while gaining the skills to identify main ideas, summarize key details, and make meaningful connections between different texts. Our writing lessons empower students to articulate their thoughts clearly, whether in imaginative short stories, opinion pieces, or informative writing. Through daily reading and writing routines, they build a robust vocabulary, sharpen their spelling, and strengthen their grammar, fostering their growth into confident and expressive communicators.

**Math:**  

In math, second graders focus on establishing a strong foundation in numbers and operations. Students engage with addition and subtraction up to 100, delve into the fascinating world of place value, and begin tackling simple multi-step problems. They explore measurement, enhance their understanding of time and money, and learn the basics of data collection. Our lessons are designed to be interactive and fun, often incorporating hands-on activities, games, and real-world examples that make mathematical concepts accessible and enjoyable. This approach encourages the development of solid problem-solving skills that will serve them well in the future.

**Social and Emotional Learning:**  

Nurturing social and emotional skills is a vital aspect of second grade. Students practice being kind friends and supportive team members by demonstrating empathy, actively listening to others, and communicating with respect. We emphasize building self-confidence, taking responsibility for their choices, and contributing to a warm, caring classroom environment where everyone feels valued.

**Creative Skills:**  

Art class is a highlight of the week! Students have the opportunity to experiment with an array of materials, colors, and techniques while drawing inspiration from renowned artists. Each project allows them to express their unique ideas and celebrate their creativity, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

**Critical Thinking:**  

We encourage our second graders to be inquisitive thinkers who ask questions and seek out answers. They learn to articulate their ideas, support them with evidence from their readings or observations, and make thoughtful connections between various subjects. **Special Programs and Extracurricular Activities**

**Field Trips:**  

Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in field trips that connect directly to their classroom learning. These exciting experiences—including visits to local parks, farms, and community landmarks—bring lessons to life and ignite a sense of discovery and wonder.

**Assessments**  

**Standardized Tests:**  

Students take the MAP assessment up to 3 times a year, focusing on reading and math. In addition, our dedicated teachers utilize classroom assessments and reading benchmarks to monitor each child's progress and tailor instruction to meet their individual learning needs.

**Progress Reports:**  

We send progress reports home three times a year. These documents provide standards-based grades on a 0–4 scale that reflect each student’s growth and understanding of essential skills and concepts.

**Grade-Specific Events**

**Annual Events:**  

Our second graders love engaging in special school traditions, such as classroom celebrations, service projects, and performances that highlight their learning. These events not only build confidence but also create a strong sense of community among students.

**Parent-Teacher Meetings:**  

Parent-teacher conferences take place in November, just before Thanksgiving break, with optional follow-up meetings in February. These discussions offer an excellent opportunity to celebrate student achievements and collaboratively set goals for ongoing success.

In second grade, students begin to explore technology in meaningful and responsible ways. They engage with educational programs that enhance their reading, writing, and math skills while learning to navigate basic digital tools safely. Our approach to technology enriches their learning experiences and helps them develop foundational digital literacy skills that will benefit them in their future educational journeys.
