Grade-Level Overview
1. Literacy
Students strengthen their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary through fiction and nonfiction texts. Writing instruction focuses on composing clear sentences and organized paragraphs while using correct grammar. Students also learn to write in cursive to develop handwriting fluency and fine motor skills. Speaking and listening skills are developed through discussions and presentations aligned with Common Core ELA standards. Each month, students complete a book report to enhance comprehension, organization, and presentation skills.2. Mathematics
Students build a strong understanding of multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They explore fractions, time, measurement, data, and geometry while applying problem-solving and reasoning skills consistent with Common Core Math standards.3. Science
Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), students investigate topics such as forces and motion, life cycles, ecosystems, and weather. Through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning, they develop curiosity and an understanding of scientific processes.4. Social Studies
Following Washington State standards, students study communities, geography, Native American cultures, government, and economics. They learn to use maps, understand civic responsibilities, and make connections between local and global communities.5. Social and Emotional Learning
Students develop cooperation, empathy, and self-regulation. Lessons and classroom activities emphasize teamwork, responsible decision-making, and respect for others.6. Creative Arts
Art, music, and movement provide opportunities for creativity and self-expression while reinforcing academic skills and cultural awareness.7. Assessments and Progress
Students complete classroom projects and performance tasks throughout the year. MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments are given in fall, winter, and spring to monitor growth in reading, language arts, and math. Progress is communicated through report cards and family conferences.8. Technology Integration
Students use digital tools for research, writing, and presentations while developing essential typing skills to improve speed and accuracy. Platforms such as Google Classroom and educational apps support learning across all subjects.9. Enrichment
Students participate in STEM challenges, creative projects, and collaborative learning experiences that extend classroom instruction. Each year, students visit the White River Valley Museum to learn about Native American history and culture, deepening their understanding of local heritage and the connections between past and present.
